Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the Name, who is truly ours?

I look upon pleasure and pain alike; I shall not forsake the Name. The Lord Himself forgives me and blends me with Himself.

Nothing finally belongs to you but the Name — and rooted in it, pleasure and pain look alike.
The deeper layer

Nothing is truly ours except the Name.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Raam naam bin kavan hamaaraa — without the Name, who is ours? In the end, people and things all move on. The Name is what stays.

Then comes the steady heart of someone rooted in the One: sukh dukh sam kar — I see happiness and pain alike. Sukh means happiness, and dukh means pain. Think of a tree with deep roots. Sunny days and storms come and go, but the tree stands. Another shabad in this raag says the same.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to meet pleasure and pain with the same steady heart?
