The One Loves His Devotees, and That Love Is Freedom

ਨਾ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਦੂਖੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਾਗੈ ॥

The Messenger of Death cannot touch him with pain;
ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਜਾਗੈ ॥

the Lord's humble servant remains awake to the Love of the Naam.

The Lord is the Lover of His devotees; He dwells with His devotees.

O Nanak, they are liberated, through the Love of the Lord. ||8||9||

In plain words

The Messenger of Death cannot touch him; the Lord's servant stays awake to the Love of the Name.

The Lord is the Lover of His devotees; He dwells with them. O Nanak, they are liberated through His Love.

The One is the Lover of His devotees and dwells with them — and that love itself is freedom.
The deeper layer

The One loves those who love the One, and that love sets them free.

Bhagat vachhal means "the One who loves the devotees." Bhagat vachhal bhagtaa har sang — the One loves the devotees and stays with them. The love runs both ways. The soul loves the One, and the One lives right beside the soul.

The one who stays jaagai, awake, to the love of the Name is not touched by the pain of jamdoot, death's messenger. And naanak mukat bha-ay har rang — they are set free through the One's love. Mukat means free. Think of a child holding a parent's hand in a crowd. They aren't afraid, because love is holding on. Love itself is the freedom. Another shabad says the same.

A Question to Sit With

What is it like to be loved by the very thing you love?
