More Never Fills the Hole; Reflection Does

ਬੰਧਨ ਸਉਦਾ ਅਣਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
banDhan sa-udaa anveechaaree.
They are entangled in trade without contemplation.
ਤਿਪਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
tipat naahee maa-i-aa moh pasaaree. ||5||
They are not satisfied by attachment to the expanse of Maya. ||5||

In plain words

The traders are tangled in their trading. They buy and sell and never stop to think.

However much they gather of Maya's great spread, it never fills them up.

More never fills the hole — reflection does.
The deeper layer

This one says getting more never fills the empty feeling; stopping to think does.

BanDhan sa-udaa anveechaaree — people are tied up in trade without veechaar, without stopping to reflect. Tipat naahee maa-i-aa moh pasaaree — clinging to the big spread of Maya never satisfies.

The problem is not trading. Elsewhere Aasaa praises the trader who deals in the Name. The net is trading without ever stopping to think.

Maya is the glittering pull of the world. Here is the trick of it: what Maya really sells is wanting. Getting more only makes the wanting stronger. Think of eating salty chips when you are thirsty. Each handful makes you thirstier.

A Question to Sit With

When did getting something you wanted leave you still wanting?
