A Full Vault Can't Replace a Devoted Heart

ਬੰਧਨ ਸਾਹ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
banDhan saah saNcheh Dhan jaa-ay.
They are entangled with that wealth, amassed by bankers.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਥਾਇ ॥੬॥
bin har bhagat na pav-ee thaa-ay. ||6||
Without devotion to the Lord, they do not become acceptable. ||6||

In plain words

The bankers are tangled with the wealth they have amassed.

But without devotion to the Lord, none of it makes a life acceptable.

A full vault cannot stand in for a devoted heart.
The deeper layer

This one says a full vault cannot take the place of a loving heart.

BanDhan saah sancheh Dhan jaa-ay — bankers are tied up with the wealth they pile up. Bin har bhagat na pav-ee thaa-ay — without devotion to the One, a life is not accepted.

The idea is being parvaan, accepted, the way a real coin is accepted at the bank. A banker knows better than anyone how to test a coin. Here the test turns around. In the end, the life itself is weighed, and piled-up money adds nothing to the scale.

Aasaa often uses trading pictures like this. There is a kind of wealth that fire cannot burn and thieves cannot steal. The banker's vault holds none of it unless the heart holds the Name.

A Question to Sit With

What are you gathering that will actually count in the end?
