Verse 3 of 11

Build What You Need, but the Roof Is Not the Sky

ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਘਰ ਬਾਂਧੀਅਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਹਣਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
neet neet ghar baaNDhee-ah jay rahnaa ho-ee.
Go ahead and build your houses, if you think you will stay here forever and ever.
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਚਲਸੀ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥
pind pavai jee-o chalsee jay jaanai ko-ee. ||2||
The body shall fall, and the soul shall depart; if only they knew this. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Go ahead — build your houses — if you think you will live here forever and ever.

The body will fall, and the soul will depart. If only people knew this while there is time.

Build what you need — just never believe the roof is the sky.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak uses a teacher's oldest trick: mock permission. Go ahead, build — if you're staying forever. The sentence collapses under its own condition, because no one is staying forever, and everyone knows it the moment they are asked. The verse does not forbid building; the Gurus lived the householder path and built towns. It forbids the forgetting that building induces — the way a finished roof quietly persuades its owner that nothing above it matters.

A Question to Sit With

What do you own that quietly makes you feel more permanent than you are?
