Why Roam for a Treasure Sewn Into Your Own Coat?

They do not understand the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and the essence of excellence within them. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Why do the yogis, the pleasure-seekers, and the beggars in holy dress roam through foreign lands?

They do not understand the Guru's Word — or the treasure of excellence inside themselves.

Why roam foreign lands for a treasure sewn into your own coat?
The deeper layer

Why travel the world looking for a treasure that is already sewn inside your own coat?

The second door is the wanderers. Yogis, pleasure-seekers and beggars in holy robes travel to far-off lands. They are sure the holy is somewhere else. Maybe at the next temple. Maybe on the next mountain.

Here is the reason they keep going: gur kaa sabad na cheenhee — they do not understand the Guru's Word. And so they miss tat saar nirantar, the precious treasure inside them. Those are really one mistake, not two. The Word points you home. Think of hunting all over the house for your glasses while they sit on your head. Miss the Word, and you search the whole world for what you carried all along.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever searched everywhere for something that was with you all along?
