The Scholar Reads Every Book but Where God Hides

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪਾਧੇ ਜੋਇਸੀ ਨਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥
pandit paaDhay jo-isee nit parheh puraanaa.
The Pandits, the religious scholars, the teachers and astrologers, and those who endlessly read the Puraanas,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਲੁਕਾਣਾ ॥੪॥
antar vasat na jaananHee ghat barahm lukaanaa. ||4||
do not know what is within; God is hidden deep within them. ||4||

In plain words

The pandits, the scholars of religion, the teachers, the astrologers, the ones who read the Puraanas without end —

they do not know what is within. God is hidden deep inside them.

The scholar reads every book but one — the reader, where God is hiding.
The deeper layer

You can read every holy book and still miss the One hiding inside you.

The third door is the learned. Pandit means a scholar of religion. Jo-isee are astrologers, who read the stars. Some read the Puraanas, the old story-books, over and over, every day. They work hard, and the Guru grants that.

But he names what they miss: antar vasat na jaananHee — they do not know what is within. Ghat barahm lukaanaa — God is hidden deep inside them. Think of someone who reads every map of the city but never looks out their own window. God is not far from the scholar. God is closer than all the scholar's books. God is missed not for being too far, but for being too near.

A Question to Sit With

Can much knowledge actually get in the way of knowing? How?
