Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 269
Verse 7 of 9

Willpower Grips Tighter; Only the Word Opens the Hand

ਇਕਿ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਦੇ ਸੇ ਜਤੀ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik bind jatan kar raakh-day say jatee kahaaveh.
Some control their sexual energy, and are known as celibates.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਛੂਟਹੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥੬॥
bin gur sabad na chhoothee bharam aavahi jaaveh. ||6||
But without the Guru's Word, they are not saved, and they wander in reincarnation. ||6||

In plain words

Some hold their impulses under strict control and are honored as celibates.

But without the Guru's Word they are not carried across; they wander through birth after birth.

Willpower grips the self tighter; only the Word teaches the hand to open.
The deeper layer

Willpower alone just grips tighter. Only the Guru's Word opens the hand.

The fifth door is strong self-control. Jatee were people who chose never to marry, to master the body's desires. Many counted this the very top of discipline. The verse does not deny their effort. It says the effort does not add up to crossing over.

Here is why. Even perfect willpower is still "me" holding onto "me." Think of a fist squeezing a handful of sand. The harder you squeeze, the more slips away. Bin gur sabad na chhoothee — without the Guru's Word, they are not set free. The Word does what force cannot. It melts the gripping "I" instead of making it stronger. Discipline is a good helper on the path, but it is not the top. Without grace through the Word, the soul keeps coming and going, however hard it tries.

A Question to Sit With

Where in your life does trying harder actually work — and where does it just tighten the knot?
