When the mind's restless wants grow still, a person truly crosses the scary ocean of the world.
From the very beginning, through all the ages, You have been the kind Master. I come to Your shelter.
When the wanting in our mind grows quiet, we cross the rough waters of life.
Mansaa maneh samaa-ilay — when the mind's wishes settle down. Mansaa means wants or wishes. The verse says calming them, not feeding them, is what carries a person across the bha-ojal, the scary ocean of the world.
On the far shore is a kindness older than time. Aad jugaad da-i-aal too — from the start and through all the ages, You have been kind. So there are two parts. The stilling is our job. The shelter was always there. Think of a glass of muddy water. Stir it, and it stays cloudy. Let it sit, and it clears. The ocean only looks scary to a churning mind. For a calm one, the crossing has already begun.
What actually helps your mind grow still — and how often do you give it that?
