Only the One Who Made the Jewel Can Price It

ਰਤਨਾ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਸੋ ਧਣੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
ratnaa paarakh so Dhanee tin keemat paa-ee.
That Lord Master is the Assayer of the jewel of the mind; He places the value on it.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥੧੭॥
naanak saahib man vasai sachee vadi-aa-ee. ||8||17||
O Nanak, True is the Glory of that one, in whose mind the Lord Master dwells. ||8||17||

In plain words

The Lord and Master is Himself the Assayer of the jewel of the mind; He sets its value.

O Nanak, True is the glory of the one in whose mind the Master dwells.

Only the One who made the jewel can price it — every other appraisal is amateur.
The deeper layer

Only the One who made the jewel can say what it is worth.

The shabad ends at a jeweler's table. The mind, offered and then surrendered, turns out to be a jewel. The one who tests its worth is the Master Himself. No market, no crowd, and no panel of judges gets a say.

There is real comfort hidden in this. Other people's opinions of you, high or low, are just guesses. Think of a painting judged by passers-by, while the artist who made it knows exactly what it is. The only tester who matters is the One who made the stone.

The last line tells His verdict. Where the Master lives in the mind, the glory is True. Sach means true, the kind that lasts after every other shine has washed away.

A Question to Sit With

Whose opinion of you do you treat as the final price — and is that appraiser qualified?
