Know What You Are All the Way Down: the One

ਜਿਨੀ ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਪਰਮਾਤਮੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
jinee aatam cheeni-aa parmaatam so-ee.
Those who understand their own souls, are themselves the Supreme Soul.
ਏਕੋ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਫਲੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥
ayko amrit birakh hai fal amrit ho-ee. ||6||
The One Lord is the tree of ambrosial nectar, which bears the ambrosial fruit. ||6||

In plain words

Those who come to know their own soul — they themselves are the Supreme Soul.

The One is the tree of Amrit, the nectar of immortality — and its fruit is Amrit too.

Know what you actually are, all the way down — and what you find there is the One.
The deeper layer

This one says: know yourself all the way down, and you find the One.

Guru Nanak says it plainly, with no softening: jinee aatam cheeni-aa parmaatam so-ee — those who know their own soul are the Supreme Soul. Not "like" the Supreme Soul. Not "close to" it. They are it.

Think of a wave that truly understands its own water. It has understood the ocean, because there was never a second water.

The second line seals it with a tree. The One is a tree of Amrit, the nectar of deathless life. And its fruit is Amrit too. Like comes from like. So what grows from the One shares the One's deathless heart.

Knowing yourself is not just a step toward the One. Carried all the way down, it is the meeting itself.

A Question to Sit With

If you go beneath your name, your body, your thoughts — what is left that is really you?
