The World Says the Name; the Gift Is Understanding It

Everyone who comes and goes chants Your Name.

When it is pleasing to Your Will, then the Gurmukh understands. Otherwise, the self-willed manmukhs wander in ignorance. ||5||

In plain words

Everyone who comes and goes takes Your Name — all of them, the whole procession.

But only when it pleases Your Will does the Gurmukh understand; the rest wander, self-willed and unknowing.

The whole world says the Name — the gift is understanding what it says.
The deeper layer

This one says everyone says the Name, but understanding it is a gift.

naam tayraa sabh ko-ee layt hai — everyone takes Your Name. Everyone who is born and passes on says it somehow. It is in greetings, in promises, in sad times. Almost no one never says it.

So the real difference is not between saying the Name and not saying it. It is between saying it and understanding it. Think of a song you have sung a hundred times. One day you really listen to the words, and suddenly they mean something.

That understanding comes when the One wishes it. It comes to the Gurmukh, the one who turns toward the Guru. The manmukh, who follows only their own will, keeps wandering, still not knowing.

A Question to Sit With

What words do you say so often that you have stopped hearing them — and what would it take to hear them again?
