This is the great glory of meeting the True Guru:
it has quenched the fire of possessiveness and craving.
Steeped in effortless peace, I sing the praises of the One.
The proof that you have truly met the Guru is simple: the fire inside has gone out.
Guru Amar Das could have named visions or special powers as the proof. Instead he names a cooled fire. Two flames burn under every restless life. Mamtaa is the "mine, mine" feeling that wants to own things. Tarisnaa is craving, a thirst that grows the more you drink, like salty chips that make you thirstier. Meeting the True Guru puts both flames out. That is the Guru's sure mark.
Notice how the fire goes out. Nobody fights it. The word is bujhaa-ee, put out, like a lamp that goes dark when its oil runs low. Sahaj, a calm and easy peace, gives the flames nothing more to burn.
And what rises from the cooled heart is song, not emptiness. Sehjay maataa har gun gaa-ee — filled with that calm, I sing the praises of the One.
What are you calling 'mine' most tightly right now — and what does holding it that way cost you?
