Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 28
Verse 5 of 5

Even the Love of Truth Is Planted in You

ਸਾਚੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
saach pi-aaraa aap karay-i.
He Himself infuses love for the Truth.
ਅਵਰੀ ਕਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥
avree ka-o saach na day-ay.
Unto others, the Truth is not bestowed.
If He bestows it upon someone, says Nanak, then, in the world hereafter, that person is not called to account. ||4||3||

In plain words

You are the one who plants the love of truth in a person.

Where You do not plant it, it does not grow on its own.

And the one in whom You plant it — says Nanak — has nothing left to answer for.

Even the love of truth is planted in you — your part is to be ready ground.
The deeper layer

Even our love of truth is a gift the One plants in us.

Saach pi-aaraa aap karay-i — the One gives the love of Truth. Saach means truth. The next line can sound hard: "unto others, the Truth is not bestowed." Why would some people get it and others not?

Other teachings help here. An earlier shabad in this raag says grace can't be blocked once it flows. A teaching in Raag Gauree pictures a bowl turned upside down, staying empty in the rain. Grace falls on everyone, like rain. It takes root where a heart is turned up to receive it. And the one in whom it grows has nothing left to answer for.

A Question to Sit With

What helps a good thing actually take root in you, instead of passing through?
