The One's Arrival Is What Clears the Heart

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ॥

You Yourself created and You Yourself give.

You Yourself eliminate evil-mindedness;
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
gur parsaad vasai man aa-ay.
by Guru's Grace, You come to abide in our minds,

and then, pain and darkness are dispelled from within. ||3||

In plain words

You made us, and You give to us.

You are the one who clears the meanness out of a heart.

When grace lets You settle into a mind, the pain and the darkness inside simply lift.

You don't scrub the heart clean to earn the One — the One's arrival is what clears it.
The deeper layer

When the One comes to live in the heart, the meanness and the sadness clear out.

Durmat means a mean or twisted way of thinking. The verse does not say we scrub it out by trying harder on our own. It says the One clears it away. Gur parsaad vasai man aa-ay — by the Guru's grace, the One comes to live in the mind. Then dukh anhayraa vichahu jaa-ay: the pain and the darkness leave from inside.

The order matters. The One arrives first, and the clearing follows. Think of a dark room. You don't sweep the darkness out before you switch on the light. You switch on the light, and the dark is simply gone. In the same way, you don't clean yourself up to earn the guest. The guest's arrival is what cleans the house.

A Question to Sit With

What in you might lift on its own if you simply made room for something good to settle in?
