Through the Naam, the fire of desire is extinguished; the Naam is obtained by His Will. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

The True Guru has led me to understand the Name — and without the Name, the hunger never goes away.

Through the Name, the fire of craving is put out; and the Name comes by His Will.

The hunger under all your hungers has exactly one food.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It names what all that hoping was really trying to feed: a hunger.

Vin naavai bhukh na jaa-ee — without the Name, the hunger does not go away. Bhukh means hunger. No new thing we get can quiet it, because it was never a hunger for things. Every wish that comes true leaves the hunger still there, in a new disguise. Think of a new game that is exciting for a week, and then you want the next one.

Only the Name reaches the real hunger of the soul. The same is true of tarisnaa, the fire of craving, which Guru Amar Das speaks of in hymn after hymn. You cannot put out a fire by feeding it, because fire eats fuel. It goes out through the Name. And the Name comes, the last words remind us, by rajaa-ee — the One's own will and good pleasure.

A Question to Sit With

When you finally get something you wanted badly, how long does the satisfaction actually last?
