Hope Was Created; Know Its Maker

ਕਲਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥
kal keerat sabad pachhaan.
In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, realize the Word of the Shabad.
ਏਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਚੂਕੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
ayhaa bhagat chookai abhimaan.
By this devotional worship, egotism is eliminated.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥
satgur sayvi-ai hovai parvaan.
Serving the True Guru, one becomes approved.
ਜਿਨਿ ਆਸਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਜਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
jin aasaa keetee tis no jaan. ||2||
So know the One, who created hope and desire. ||2||

In plain words

In this dark age, realize the Word — praise is the practice of Kali Yuga.

This kind of devotion ends self-conceit.

Serving the True Guru, one is accepted as genuine.

So come to know the One who created hope itself.

Hope itself was created — know its Maker, and hope stops being your master.
The deeper layer

For a hard age like ours, the answer is simple: sing the One's praise.

Kal keerat sabad pachhaan — in Kali Yuga, the dark age, praise the One and come to know the Word. Other ages used long, hard practices. In an age when attention is so scattered, a song is the right way in. Think of how a song sticks in your head even on a busy day.

This humble devotion does what harsh self-denial only boasts of doing. Ayhaa bhagat chookai abhimaan — this devotion ends abhimaan, pride in yourself. Serving the true Guru, a person is accepted.

Then comes the deepest teaching of the whole hymn: jin aasaa keetee tis no jaan — know the One who made hope. Hope is a made thing, a tool from the Creator's workshop. Do not worship the tool. Know its Maker, and then the tool finally works the way it should.

A Question to Sit With

What do you hope for most — and what would change if you knew the One behind the hoping?
