The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is obtained from the Guru; it is the greatest greatness. ||1||

In plain words

From the Guru, peace wells up — He puts out the fire of craving.

From the Guru, the Name is received: the greatest greatness there is.

Peace has an address it wells up from — and it is not your circumstances.
The deeper layer

This one says peace comes from the Guru, not from how things are going around you.

It opens with the words that shape half the hymn: gur tay, "from the Guru." Gur tay saat oopjai — from the Guru, peace wells up. Things around us can't give lasting peace; they keep changing, like a fire that flares. The Guru puts out tarisnaa agan, the fire of craving, right at its source.

The second gift is the Name, called vadee vadi-aa-ee, the greatest greatness. The world's kind of greatness is always about being more than someone else. Think of a trophy that matters only until someone wins a bigger one. This greatness is not like that. Once you have it, you can step out of that tiring contest.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you usually look for peace — and has it ever actually come from there?
