Verse 2 of 9

The World Is Burning; Running to Sanctuary Is Sanity

ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੇਤਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
ayko naam chayt mayray bhaa-ee.
Keep the One Name in your consciousness, O my Siblings of Destiny.
ਜਗਤੁ ਜਲੰਦਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਭਜਿ ਪਏ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jagat jalandaa daykh kai bhaj pa-ay sarnaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Seeing the world on fire, I have hurried to the Lord's Sanctuary. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Keep the One Name in your awareness, my brothers and sisters.

I saw the world burning — and I ran to the Sanctuary.

The world is burning — running to Sanctuary is not cowardice; it is sanity.
The deeper layer

This one says: the world is on fire, and running to shelter is the wise thing to do.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the hymn. Jagat jalandaa daykh kai bhaj pa-ay sarnaa-ee — seeing the world burning, I ran to the One's shelter.

Take the picture just as it is. The world burns with craving, anger, and grief. When the fire alarm goes off at school, you don't stand around talking about it. You head straight for the safe place. There is no shame in running. It is the wisest act in the verse.

The shelter is not a place on a map. The door was open all along: ayko naam chayt — keep the One Name in mind. No fire can reach there.

A Question to Sit With

When everything around you feels overheated, where do you actually run?
