Verse 6 of 9

When the Self Steps Aside, the Light Walks Through

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
satgur mili-ai aap ga-i-aa taribhavan sojhee paa-ee.
Meeting the True Guru, self-conceit is removed, and understanding of the three worlds is obtained.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਪਸਰਿ ਰਹੀ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
nirmal jot pasar rahee jotee jot milaa-ee. ||5||
The Immaculate Divine Light is pervading and permeating everywhere; one's light merges into the Light. ||5||

In plain words

Meeting the True Guru, pride goes away. Then you understand all three worlds.

The One's pure Light is spread through everything. Your own light joins that Light.

When the self steps out of the doorway, the Light walks through — and finds itself everywhere.
The deeper layer

This one says when the self steps aside, the Light shines through.

This is the high point of the hymn, in Guru Amar Das's calm voice. First, space is cleared. Satgur mili-ai aap ga-i-aa — meeting the True Guru, self-conceit leaves. In the room it used to fill, understanding of the three worlds simply appears. The three worlds means everything there is. That understanding was blocked, not missing.

Then the seeing: nirmal jot pasar rahee — the pure Light is already spread through everything. It does not arrive; it gets noticed. Think of pulling back a heavy curtain. The sunshine didn't just show up; it was out there all along.

Then coming home: jotee jot milaa-ee — one's light merges into the Light. It is like a drop finding out it was always part of the ocean, told here with light instead of water.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt, even for a moment, that the same aliveness in you was in everything else too?
