Wisdom Doesn't Abolish the Mind; It Breaks Its Fever

ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਈ ॥
poorai gur samjhaa-i-aa mat ootam ho-ee.
The Perfect Guru instructs, and one's intellect becomes sublime.
ਅੰਤਰੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥
antar seetal saaNt ho-ay naamay sukh ho-ee. ||6||
A cooling and soothing peace comes within, and through the Naam, peace is obtained. ||6||

In plain words

The Perfect Guru explains, and the mind becomes wise and good.

A cool, soothing peace settles within — and through the Name, there is peace.

Wisdom does not abolish the mind — it breaks the mind's fever, and everything cools.
The deeper layer

This one says wisdom doesn't throw the mind away; it cools its fever.

After the high point comes the calm. Guru Amar Das uses a word from the body. Antar seetal saat — a cool peace inside, like a fever breaking. The world was burning in the pause line. The fire of craving was put out in the first verse. Now the cool inside is simply felt. Think of lying in bed sick, and then the fever finally drops.

Notice also what gets honored: the mind. Mat ootam ho-ee — the understanding (mat) becomes excellent (ootam). Devotion does not throw the thinking mind away. It makes it better. The mind was never the enemy; the fever was.

A Question to Sit With

What does peace physically feel like in your body — and when did you last feel it?
