Verse 8 of 9

You Can't Schedule the Glance, but You Can Stand Ready

ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਂ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾਂ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਈ ॥
pooraa satgur taaN milai jaaN nadar karay-ee.
One meets the Perfect True Guru only when the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace.
ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਸਭ ਕਟੀਅਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੭॥
kilvikh paap sabh katee-ah fir dukh bighan na ho-ee. ||7||
All sins and vices are eradicated, and one shall never again suffer pain or distress. ||7||

In plain words

The Perfect True Guru is met only when He bestows His Glance of Grace.

Then all sins and failings are cut away, and pain and obstruction do not return.

You cannot schedule the Glance — but you can stand where it is known to fall.
The deeper layer

This one says you can't schedule grace, but you can be ready for it.

This verse is the honest hinge of the hymn. Even the meeting that everything flows from is not set up from our side. Pooraa satgur taa milai jaa nadar karay-ee — the Perfect True Guru is met only when the One looks with grace (nadar). We can't book that meeting. But we can stand where grace is known to fall, like waiting at the stop where the bus always comes.

What follows is clean and quick. Kilvikh paap sabh katee-ah — all wrongs and failings are cut away. They are not slowly paid off. Grace does not bargain over the debt; it tears up the bill. Then the freed life walks on with nothing blocking the way.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to you if the worst things you have done could be fully cut away?
