Verse 9 of 9

The Name in the Mind Isn't the Path; It's the Reward

ਆਪਣੈ ਹਥਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਦੇ ਨਾਮੇ ਲਾਏ ॥
aapnai hath vadi-aa-ee-aa day naamay laa-ay.
Glory is in His Hands; He bestows His Name, and attaches us to it.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪਾਏ ॥੮॥੪॥੨੬॥
naanak naam niDhaan man vasi-aa vadi-aa-ee paa-ay. ||8||4||26||
O Nanak, the treasure of the Naam abides within the mind, and glory is obtained. ||8||4||26||

In plain words

All greatness is in His Hands; He bestows the Name and attaches us to it.

O Nanak, when the treasure of the Name dwells in the mind — that is the greatness received.

The Name in the mind is not the path to the reward — it is the reward.
The deeper layer

This one says keeping the Name in your mind is not the road to the prize; it is the prize.

The ending gathers the hymn together. Aapnai hath vadi-aa-ee-aa — all greatness is in His hands. Every honor the world hands out comes from one treasury with one Keeper.

And He gives twice. Day naamay laa-ay — He gives the Name, and He attaches us to it. Even our holding on is His doing. Think of a parent who gives a child a kite and also keeps a hand on the string with them.

Then the last line changes what we thought the prize was. Naam niDhaan man vasi-aa vadi-aa-ee paa-ay — when the treasure of the Name lives in the mind, greatness is received. The greatness is not a reward for holding the Name. Having the Name inside is the greatness. The reward and the treasure were the same thing all along.

A Question to Sit With

If honor could not be seen by others — if it lived only inside you — what would you want yours to be?
