Night and day, center your consciousness on true devotional worship of the True Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Listen, O my mind: enshrine the Name within, and He will come, Himself, to meet you.

Night and day, practice true devotion — keep your consciousness joined to the True One.

Prepare the room and the Guest comes on His own — the meeting was always His to make.
The deeper layer

The hymn opens with the gentlest possible promise: prepare the room, and the Guest arrives on His own — aapay aa-ay milai, He comes Himself to meet you. Not: climb to Him. Not: earn the audience. Enshrine the Name — make the heart a place where He is honored — and the meeting is His initiative. The instruction that follows is simply how a room is kept ready: an-din, night and day, the attention joined to the True One like a lamp kept lit in the window.

A Question to Sit With

If someone you loved were coming to stay in your heart, what would you clear out to make room?
