The World Grows Great by Adding; the Soul by Evicting

ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
ayko naam Dhi-aa-ay tooN sukh paavahi mayray bhaa-ee.
Meditate on the One Naam, and you shall find peace, O my Siblings of Destiny.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-umai doojaa door kar vadee vadi-aa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Eradicate egotism and duality, and your glory shall be glorious. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Meditate on the One Name, and you will find peace, my brothers and sisters.

Send egotism and duality far away — that is the true greatness.

The world grows great by adding; the soul grows great by evicting.
The deeper layer

The Pause distributes the labor honestly. Our side has two motions: turn toward the One Name, and evict the two squatters — haumai and doojaa, the ego and the second-loyalty — that keep peace from finding a place to sit. And the second line performs a quiet redefinition the hymn will keep proving: greatness (vadee vadi-aa-ee) is not accumulation but eviction. The world grows great by adding; the soul grows great by what it finally sends away.

A Question to Sit With

What would be greater to lose than to gain — name one thing.
