Searching outwardly, what can anyone find? The commodity is deep within the home of the self, O Siblings of Destiny.

The entire world is wandering around, deluded by doubt; the self-willed manmukhs lose their honor. ||5||

In plain words

Searching outside, what can anyone find? The treasure is within the home, brothers and sisters.

Deluded by doubt, the whole world wanders — and the self-willed lose their honor.

The whole world is out searching for what it left at home.
The deeper layer

Guru Amar Das asks a question that answers itself: if the treasure is inside, what can you find by searching outside?

Baahar bhaalay so ki-aa lahai — searching outside, what can anyone find? Vath gharai andar — the treasure is inside the home.

Then he describes the sad scene. Sabh jag, the whole world, wanders around, lost in doubt. Picture a huge crowd of people all walking away from their own houses, searching.

The manmukh is the person who follows only their own wants instead of the Guru. They lose their honor. The farther from home you go begging for what home already holds, the more your dignity slips away.

Think of hunting all over town for your glasses while they sit on top of your head. The whole world is out searching for what it left at home.

A Question to Sit With

What have you been seeking from other people that you might already have within you?
