The Masterpiece Hangs Unpriced in Every Heart

ਪਾਰਖੀਆ ਵਥੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਲਈ ਗੁਰ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
paarkhee-aa vath samaal la-ee gur sojhee ho-ee.
The appraisers cherish the commodity of the Name; they obtain understanding from the Guru.
ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਸਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੪॥
naam padaarath amul saa gurmukh paavai ko-ee. ||4||
The wealth of the Naam is priceless; how few are the Gurmukhs who obtain it. ||4||

In plain words

The appraisers gather in this commodity with care — from the Guru comes their discernment.

The wealth of the Name is beyond price; rare is the Gurmukh who receives it.

The masterpiece hangs unpriced in every heart — what is rare is the trained eye.
The deeper layer

Guru Amar Das says the Name is priceless, and what is rare is the eye that can see its worth.

The paarkhee is an expert appraiser, someone who tests coins and gems to tell the real ones from the fakes. Here the appraiser is the hero. With trained eyes, they spot the Name and samaal la-ee, gather it up with care.

Think of a garage sale. Everyone walks past an old painting. Then an art expert stops, looks closely, and quietly buys it. It was a masterpiece all along.

Where does that trained eye come from? Gur sojhee — the understanding the Guru gives.

The Name is amul, priceless, and few find it. But that is not because there is too little. The treasure has no end. What is rare is people who can see its worth. The masterpiece hangs in every heart.

A Question to Sit With

What do you own or carry that others undervalue because they lack the eye for it?
