Verse 4 of 9

The Body Isn't a Prison but an Estate Barely Toured

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮਹਲ ਅਨੇਕ ਹਹਿ ਜੀਉ ਕਰੇ ਵਸੇਰਾ ॥
andar mahal anayk heh jee-o karay vasayraa.
There are so many mansions within the body; the soul dwells within them.
ਮਨ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਫੇਰਾ ॥੩॥
man chindi-aa fal paa-isee fir ho-ay na fayraa. ||3||
He obtains the fruits of his mind's desires, and he shall not have to go through reincarnation again. ||3||

In plain words

Within the body there are mansions upon mansions — and the soul makes its dwelling there.

There, the mind's true longings bear fruit — and the cycle of coming and going ends.

The body is not a prison to escape — it is an estate you have barely toured.
The deeper layer

Guru Amar Das says the body is not a small, plain box. Inside it are many grand rooms.

Andar mahal anayk heh — there are many mansions within. The soul makes its home in them. All that inside this ordinary frame of bones and breath.

Some people have thought of the body as a prison, something to escape from. This verse sees it as a great house, room after room, with the soul at home inside. Think of a castle you have lived in for years but only ever used the kitchen.

In those inner rooms, man chindi-aa fal — the heart's true wishes come true. Not the surface wants, like one more snack or one more game. The deep longing under all of them.

A soul that has found what it was longing for does not need to come back looking again. Fir ho-ay na fayraa — no more rounds of coming and going.

A Question to Sit With

What do you think your deepest wish actually is, beneath all the surface wants?
