Purity Isn't Quarantine but Immunity

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮਨਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
har jee-o nirmal nirmalaa nirmal man vaasaa.
The Beloved Lord is the purest of the pure; He comes to dwell in the pure mind.

gurmatee salaahee-ai bikhi-aa maahi udaasaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Praising the Lord, through the Guru's Teachings, one remains unaffected by corruption. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Beloved Lord is the purest of the pure — He comes to dwell in the mind made pure.

Praise Him through the Guru's Teachings, and live untouched in the middle of corruption.

Purity is not quarantine — it is immunity: in the poison, untouched.
The deeper layer

This one says the pure One lives in a pure mind, even in the middle of a messy world.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. nirmal nirmalaa — the One is the purest of the pure, and comes to live in a mind made pure. Like finds like. So keeping the mind clean is not about rules. It is like tidying your home for a guest you love.

Then comes the surprise: bikhi-aa maahi udaasaa. Bikhi-aa means the poison of the world's wrongs. Udaasaa means untouched by it. The verse does not say "run away from the world." It says live in it, and stay clean.

Think of a lotus flower. It grows up out of muddy water, yet its petals stay clean. Purity here is not hiding away. It is like being protected from a cold everyone else is catching. A mind full of praise walks the same streets and carries none of the dirt home.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay yourself in surroundings that pull everyone else along?
