We Become What We Graze Beside

ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਸਭਿ ਐਸੇ ਰਹਹਿ ਜੈਸੇ ਪਸੁ ਢੋਰ ॥
bin sangtee sabh aisay raheh jaisay pas dhor.
Without the Sangat, the Company of the Holy, all remain like beasts and animals.
jiniH keetay tisai na jaananHee bin naavai sabh chor. ||6||
They do not know the One who created them; without the Name, all are thieves. ||6||

In plain words

Without the Sangat, people live as the herd lives — grazing, wandering, unaware.

They never come to know the One who made them; without the Name, all live on what was never truly theirs.

We become what we graze beside — and gratitude is all that separates a guest from a thief.
The deeper layer

We become like the company we keep, and a grateful heart knows where its gifts come from.

Bin sangtee sabh aisay raheh jaisay pas dhor — without good company, all live like cattle. Cattle eat, wander, and follow whoever walks in front. They never think about who made them.

This is not an insult. It is about company. We become like the ones we spend time beside. Think of how you pick up the words and habits of your closest friends. The second line uses a strong word: bin naavai sabh chor, without the Name, all are chor, thieves. Here is what it means. Every breath and every gift comes from the One. To use them all life long and never say thank you is like enjoying things you never paid for. Gratitude is the difference between a welcome guest and someone just taking.

A Question to Sit With

Whose company are you grazing beside — and is it making you more awake or more automatic?
