Every Craving Is the One Thirst in Disguise

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 3.
Aasaa, Third Mehl:
ਸਭ ਨਾਵੈ ਨੋ ਲੋਚਦੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥
sabh naavai no lochdee jis kirpaa karay so paa-ay.
Everyone longs for the Name, but he alone receives it, unto whom the Lord shows His Mercy.
bin naavai sabh dukh hai sukh tis jis man vasaa-ay. ||1||
Without the Name, there is only pain; he alone obtains peace, whose mind is filled with the Name. ||1||

In plain words

Everyone longs for the Name — but it comes to the one on whom He bestows His Mercy.

Without the Name there is only pain; peace belongs to the one in whose mind it dwells.

Every craving is the one thirst wearing a disguise — and the real water is given, not chased.
The deeper layer

This one says every craving is really one thirst in disguise.

Guru Amar Das begins by counting who longs for the Name: sabh naavai no lochdee — everyone longs for the Name. Under every craving people chase, like fun, money, or being noticed, the verse hears one thirst in a thousand costumes.

The costumes can be chased. But the real thing is given, by Mercy.

The second line is honest. Without the Name, there is only dukh, pain. Every substitute feeds the costume but leaves the thirst. Think of drinking soda when you are really thirsty for water. It fills you up, but the thirst stays.

Peace has only one address: the mind where the Name has come to live.

A Question to Sit With

Underneath your strongest want right now — what is the deeper thing you are actually thirsty for?
