In plain words

You are infinite, and You are merciful — I take Your Sanctuary.

From the Perfect Guru comes the greatness of the Name.

Infinite, so nothing is too big; merciful, so no one is turned away — that is what Sanctuary means.
The deeper layer

This one says the One is both endless and kind, so shelter is always open.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It joins two qualities. The first is bay-ant, infinite, so no problem is too big. The second is da-i-aal, merciful, so no one is turned away.

Infinite without mercy would be like the weather: huge, but it does not care. Mercy without infinity would be a kind neighbor with only a little to give. Together, they make a shelter you can always run to. Think of a hospital that never closes and never turns anyone away.

The second line names the door into that shelter, as this group of hymns keeps saying. It is the Perfect Guru. From the Guru, the greatness of the Name is received.

A Question to Sit With

When you need refuge, do you doubt more that help is big enough — or that it is willing?
