Verse 3 of 9

Anxiety Requires a Second Power; There Is None

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ॥
antar baahar ayk hai baho biDh sarisat upaa-ee.
Inwardly and outwardly, there is only the One Lord. He has created the world, with its many varieties.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਭਾਈ ॥੨॥
hukmay kaar karaa-idaa doojaa kis kahee-ai bhaa-ee. ||2||
According to the Order of His Will, He makes us act. What else can we talk about, O Siblings of Destiny? ||2||

In plain words

Inside and outside, there is only the One — who created this world in all its many forms.

By His Will He sets every hand to its work. Of what 'other' could we even speak, brothers and sisters?

Anxiety requires a second power — and there is no second.
The deeper layer

This one says worry needs a second power, and there is none.

The verse says antar baahar ayk hai — inside and outside, there is One. This is Ik Onkar, "One Creator," in everyday terms. The mind builds a fence between the inner life and the outside world. But both are one Presence. All the many kinds of things in the world are His artwork, not His rivals.

The last question points the way: doojaa kis kahee-ai — whom could we call a second? Every worry, the verse hints, needs a second. It needs a rival power, or some place outside the One, or enemy ground. Think of a scary shadow that turns out to be your own coat on a hook. Take away the second, and worry has no stage to stand on.

A Question to Sit With

Which of your worries would survive if you truly believed nothing exists outside the One?
