Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 287
Verse 5 of 9

The Same Door Opens for Every Late Starter Who Serves

ਇਕਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਪਵਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਹਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਲਾਏ ॥
ik Dhur pavit paavan heh tuDh naamay laa-ay.
Some, from the very beginning, are pure and pious; You attach them to Your Name.
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥੪॥
gur sayvaa tay sukh oopjai sachai sabad bujhaa-ay. ||4||
Serving the Guru, peace wells up; through the True Word of the Shabad, one comes to understand. ||4||

In plain words

Some are pure and consecrated from the very beginning — You Yourself attach them to Your Name.

Serving the Guru, peace wells up; through the True Word, You give them understanding.

Some are born facing the light — and the same door opens for every late starter who serves.
The deeper layer

This one says the same door opens for everyone who serves, even late starters.

This is the bright side of the last verse's mystery. Some souls arrive Dhur, from the very beginning, already turned toward goodness. The same Hand that let others wander joined them to the Name. We have all met people like this. Some children are kind before anyone teaches them. Some souls seem born facing the light.

Even so, the verse does not let them take the credit: tuDh naamay laa-ay — You joined them to the Name.

Then it hands everyone the same open door, no matter how they started. Serve the Guru. Listen to the True Word. And peace wells up, for late starters too. Think of a choir where anyone who comes to practice learns the song, whether they joined in September or in May.

A Question to Sit With

Do you know someone who seems naturally good? What do you think their goodness asks of you?
