Darkness Isn't Paid Off; It's Replaced

ਅਵਗਣ ਗੁਣੀ ਬਖਸਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥

The soul-bride then obtains the Lord as her Husband; meeting the Guru, this union comes about. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Through the virtues she gathers, her faults are forgiven — and she embraces love for the One.

The soul-bride receives the Lord as her Beloved: meeting the Guru, the union is arranged.

Darkness is not paid off — it is replaced: grow the virtues, and the faults are forgiven into irrelevance.
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the Rahao, the center of the shabad. It says darkness is not paid off. It is replaced.

Avgan gunee bakhsaa-i-aa means faults are forgiven through virtues. It is not like a bank, with one good deed crossing out one bad one. No list balances that way. It is more like light in a dark room. Turn on the lamp, and the darkness is not punished. It is simply gone. Grow what is bright, and it crowds out the dark.

The union also has a matchmaker. Gur mayl milaa-ee means the Guru arranges the meeting. Back then, families arranged marriages. The bride's part was to be ready and loving. The introduction was made for her.

A Question to Sit With

Which is easier for you: fighting a bad habit head-on, or growing something good that crowds it out?
