Verse 2 of 9

The Nectar Rains; the Only Variable Is Your Open Mouth

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਚਾ ਵਰਸਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
amrit sachaa varasdaa gurmukhaa mukh paa-ay.
The True Ambrosial Nectar rains down, and trickles into the mouths of the Gurmukhs.
ਮਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
man sadaa haree-aavlaa sehjay har gun gaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Their minds are forever rejuvenated, and they naturally, intuitively, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

The True Amrit rains and rains — and falls into the mouths of those turned toward the Guru.

Their minds stay forever green, and with effortless ease they sing His praises.

The nectar is already raining — the only variable is the turned-up mouth.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It paints the loveliest weather: nectar falling like rain.

Amrit sachaa varasdaa — the true nectar keeps raining. It is not kept in any one person's jar, or handed out only on certain days. The sky is open over everyone. The only difference is whether your mouth is turned up to drink. Think of kids running out in the first rain with their faces tipped up to the sky. Gurbani also speaks of a bowl turned upside down that catches no rain. Here that bowl is a face.

What does the drinking do? Man sadaa haree-aavlaa — the mind stays green forever. It is green like the woods after the monsoon rains. Such a mind stays in leaf through every season, because its water does not depend on the world's weather.

A Question to Sit With

What keeps your mind green — and have you been standing where that rain falls?
