Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Those whom He Himself gives the Amrit to drink — the taste comes to them naturally, with effortless ease.
The True One is carefree, beyond all need — there is not a sesame-seed of greed in Him.
This shabad opens at a table where the One is the Host, pouring nectar for the guests.
Amrit is nectar, the sweet drink of the Name. Amrit jinaa chhakhaa-i-on — those whom He Himself gives it to taste. Even the drinking is served to us, not grabbed. And the taste comes sahj subhaa-ay, easily and naturally. That easy, unforced way marks everything real in Guru Amar Das's teaching.
Then comes a line with a smile in it. Sachaa vayparvaahu hai — the True One is carefree and needs nothing. Tis no til na tamaa-ay — He does not have even a til, a sesame seed, of greed. He gains nothing from our love. The feast is laid out entirely for the guests. Think of a grandmother who cooks a huge meal and wants nothing back but to watch you eat. So worship is never a payment. It is simply accepting the cup.
How does it change devotion to know that God gains nothing from it — that it is all for you?
