Honor Flees the Grasping and Gathers Around the Surrendered
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Through the Name of the Lord, His humble servants receive honor.
How fruitful is their coming into the world! Everyone cherishes them.
This is the "pause" line, the rahaa-o — the center of the shabad. It shows where real honor comes from.
Har har naam jan kee pat ho-ay — through the Name of the One, His humble servants gain pat, honor and dignity. It does not come from the world's ranking systems.
Then comes the highest praise this raag gives. Their life is safal, fruitful: their coming into the world was worth it. And sabh ko-ay — everyone — respects them.
Why? Because they never demanded it. Honor runs away from those who grab for it and gathers around those who let go. Think of the kid who never asks to be picked first, yet everyone wants on their team. This raag keeps asking what makes a human life worth living. Their lives answer it, just by being lived.
Who do you respect most deeply — and did they ever ask for that respect?
