Loveless Worship Is a Different Substance in Devotion's Clothes

Without loving affection, devotional worship is not possible, and the body cannot be at peace.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤੀ ਮਨ ਧੀਰਿ ॥੬॥
paraym padaarath paa-ee-ai gur bhagtee man Dheer. ||6||
The wealth of love is obtained from the Guru; through devotion, the mind becomes steady. ||6||

In plain words

Without love, there is no devotion — and the body finds no peace.

The treasure of love is received from the Guru; through devotion, the mind grows steady.

Loveless worship is not lesser devotion — it is a different substance in devotion's clothes.
The deeper layer

Guru Amar Das is saying: without love, there is no devotion at all.

Bin pi-aarai bhagat na hova-ee — without love, devotion does not happen. Not "it is weaker" or "it is unfinished". It does not exist. Worship without love is something else, wearing devotion's clothes. Think of a birthday card signed without any feeling. It looks like a card, but it is not really a gift.

Notice the body in the first line, too. Without love, even the sareer, the body, finds no peace. The restless fevers this raag keeps cooling are cooled by nothing else. And the love itself comes, as always, through the Guru. Paraym padaarath paa-ee-ai — the treasure of love is received there. Then devotion, practiced every day, gives back man Dheer: a mind grown steady and anchored, not blown about.

A Question to Sit With

Think of something you do dutifully but without love — what would it take for love to enter it?
