Verse 8 of 10

Even Your Kneeling Was Moved From Above

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
jis no bhagat karaa-ay so karay gur sabad veechaar.
He alone performs devotional worship, whom the Lord so blesses; he contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਾਰਿ ॥੭॥
hirdai ayko naam vasai ha-umai dubiDhaa maar. ||7||
The One Name abides in his heart, and he conquers his ego and duality. ||7||

In plain words

Only the one whom He moves to devotion performs it — reflecting on the Guru's Word.

The One Name comes to dwell in the heart, and ego and duality are conquered.

Even your kneeling was moved from above — and the One who moves it moves in.
The deeper layer

Guru Amar Das is saying: even your devotion is a gift the One sets moving in you.

Jis no bhagat karaa-ay so karay — only the one whom the One causes to worship does it. Even the bowing is set in motion from above. So the devotee's devotion is a gift twice over. The hymn before this one said the One plants the love. This one says the One moves the practice too.

Then the verse says what happens next. Hirdai ayko naam vasai — the One Name comes to live in the heart. The heart had two old tenants: ha-umai, the ego, and dubiDhaa, the split heart that pulls two ways. They are not thrown out by a fight. The Name simply moves in and fills the room, and there is no space left for them. Think of a garden so full of flowers that the weeds have no room to grow.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel drawn to something good, where do you think the pull comes from?
