A Protected Heart Is Only the Field; Plant Something Good

ਨਾਮੁ ਖੇਤੀ ਬੀਜਹੁ ਭਾਈ ਮੀਤ ॥
naam khaytee beejahu bhaa-ee meet.
So plant the seed of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O friends, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਨੀਤ ॥੩॥
sa-udaa karahu gur sayvhu neet. ||3||
Deal only in the constant service of the Guru. ||3||

In plain words

Now that the city is safe, plant something in it, my friends! Plant the Name like a seed in a field. And spend your days doing good, steady work — the work of kindness and remembering.

A protected heart is only the field; the point is to plant something good and tend it daily.
The deeper layer

Inside the walls, the hymn turns to what grows: naam khetee beejahu — sow the Name as a crop. A safe city is only the beginning; a city exists to be cultivated. And the 'trade' recommended — saudaa karahu gur sevhu neet — is the constant service of the Guru, day after day. Sikh spirituality is agricultural and commercial in its images on purpose: both farming and honest trade reward patient, repeated, ordinary effort rather than one dramatic gesture. You plant, you tend, you show up daily. The harvest is not seized; it is grown.

A Question to Sit With

What good 'seed' could you plant with a little daily tending?
