In the Heart's Market, Giver and Receiver Are One

ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਕੇ ਸਭਿ ਹਾਟ ॥

The Banker and the dealers dwell in the same place. ||4||

In plain words

And oh, the marketplace of this city! Every shop is stocked with the same beautiful goods: calm, and ease, and real happiness. And here is the wonder — the great Banker and the smallest trader stand together in the very same place.

In the heart's marketplace the Giver and the receiver stand in the very same place.
The deeper layer

The city now has a thriving market: saant, sahj, sukh — peace, natural ease, and joy fill every stall. But the astonishing line is the last: saah vaapaaree ekai thaat — the Banker (God) and the traders (us) 'dwell in the same place.' In the world's markets the banker sits apart, above, on a different floor from the small dealer. In this inner city there is no such distance. The source of all the wealth and the ones spending it share one ground. It is a quiet dissolving of the gap between the Giver and the one who receives — the divine is not upstairs; it stands in the stalls with you.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt that what you were looking for was closer than you expected?
