In a Sliding World, Stand Near Those Who've Found Footing

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਚਲਤਉ ਪੇਖੀਐ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥

The entire world is seen to be passing away; only the Lord's Name is lasting and stable.

So make friends with the Holy Saints, so that you may obtain a lasting place of rest. ||4||

In plain words

Look closely and you'll see the whole world is always moving on, always passing. Only the Name stays still and steady.

So make friends with steady, good-hearted people, and you'll find a resting place that doesn't move.

In a world that keeps sliding, you find your footing by standing near the people who've found theirs.
The deeper layer

Sabh jag chalta-o pekhee-ai — watch and you see it: everything is in motion, sliding away. Against all that motion, one thing is nihchal — unmoving, stable: the Name. And the practical advice is friendship: kar mitraa-ee saadh si-o — befriend the steady-hearted, and you inherit their steadiness, nihchal paavahi thaa-o, a resting place that holds. We become like whom we keep close; if you want a foothold in a sliding world, stand next to the people who have found one.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone steady you can stand near when everything feels like it's moving?
