The Name Is What Walks With You All the Way

Friends, acquaintances, children and relatives - none of these shall be your companion.

ayk nivaahoo raam naam deenaa kaa parabh naath. ||5||
The Lord's Name alone shall go with you; God is the Master of the meek. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Friends, the people you love, family — as dear as they are, none of them can walk with you all the way to the end.

One thing stays by your side the whole way: the Name of the One who is the shelter of the gentle and the small.

The people you love are precious; the one thing that walks with you all the way is the Name.
The deeper layer

The verse is not cold about love — meet, saajan, sut, bandhpaa: friends, companions, children, kin, all named with affection. It simply tells a true thing: ko-oo hot na saath — none can be your final companion; there is a road each soul walks alone. What does go all the way is ek nivaahoo raam naam — the one Name that sees you through. And its holder is described tenderly: deenaa kaa prabh naath, the Master of the meek, the protector of the small and lowly. The one thing that never leaves is also the one that stoops to the humblest.

A Question to Sit With

Who and what do you most want beside you when things are hardest?
