Love Proves Itself by What It Gladly Gives

ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਵੇਚੀ ਸੰਤ ਪਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
ih tan vaychee sant peh pi-aaray pareetam day-ay milaa-ay. ||3||
I would sell this body to the Saint, O Beloved, if he would lead me to my Dear Lord. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I would give my whole self to the one who could bring me to my Beloved. I'd hand over everything for that meeting.

Love proves itself by what it will gladly give to whoever brings it closer to the one it misses.
The deeper layer

This one says love shows how big it is by what it gladly gives.

Ih tan vaychee sant peh — I would sell this body to the saint, if he would lead me to my Beloved. It is a startling picture. But the meaning is tender, not grim. The singer would give their whole self to anyone who could guide them to the One they love.

In the verse before, the singer would give themself up for one glimpse. Here, they would give their whole self just for the guide who shows the way.

Think of a kid who saves every coin for months to buy a train ticket to visit a best friend. The cost keeps growing, and they keep paying it with a smile. Love keeps raising its own price, and gladly pays it.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who help bring you closer to what you love?
