We Learn Everything but That Our Time Is Short

ਮੰਮੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਮਧੁਸੂਦਨੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਭਇਆ ਤਬ ਚੇਤਵਿਆ ॥
mammai moh maran maDhusoodan maran bha-i-aa tab chaytvi-aa.
Mamma: In emotional attachment, he dies; he only thinks of the Lord, the Love of Nectar, when he dies.
ਕਾਇਆ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਅਵਰੋ ਪੜਿਆ ਮੰਮਾ ਅਖਰੁ ਵੀਸਰਿਆ ॥੨੮॥
kaa-i-aa bheetar avro parhi-aa mammaa akhar veesri-aa. ||28||
As long as the body is alive, he reads other things, and forgets the letter 'm', which stands for marnaa - death. ||28||

In plain words

It's easy to get so wrapped up in loving things that we forget they don't last.

We learn every letter but skip the one that matters — the 'M' that stands for the fact that our time is short.

We learn everything except the one lesson that clarifies it all: our time here is short and precious.
The deeper layer

The letter Mamma is the cleverest verse in the whole primer, because here the letter itself is the lesson. Mamma — 'M' — stands for marnaa, remembering that life is short and precious. And the poem's gentle irony: a person reads and learns everything else, all the other letters, all the other knowledge — bisari-aa — and forgets the one letter that would have put it all in perspective. Not a morbid teaching but a clarifying one: keep the 'M' in mind — that your days are numbered — and suddenly you know what actually matters and what was just noise. (See the Commentary for how this letter-as-lesson works.)

A Question to Sit With

If you really remembered your time was precious, what would you spend more of it on?
