Meet Good and Hard With the Same Even Heart

Lalla: He has assigned people to their tasks, and made the love of Maya seem sweet to them.
ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਸਹਣਾ ਭਾਣੈ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਇਆ ॥੩੧॥
khaanaa peenaa sam kar sahnaa bhaanai taa kai hukam pa-i-aa. ||31||
We eat and drink; we should endure equally whatever occurs, by His Will, by His Command. ||31||

In plain words

We're each given our work, and the pull of shiny things is made to feel sweet along the way.

So we eat, we drink, we live — and the steady thing is to take whatever comes with an even heart.

Enjoy the good and endure the hard with the same even heart — let neither run away with you.
The deeper layer

The letter Lalla is quietly grown-up wisdom. The One assigned people their tasks and made the love of Maya seem sweet — meaning the pull toward pleasant things is real and even built-in; it's not a personal weakness to feel it. The counsel isn't to reject life's ordinary pleasures — khaavai peevai — we eat and drink, fully human — but to hold them with an even heart: bhaanai... sahnaa, meeting whatever comes, sweet or hard, with the same steadiness. Enjoy the good, endure the hard, and don't let either one run away with you.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you enjoy good things without needing to cling to them?
