Verse 14 of 19

One Moment of Real Listening Changes Everything

jhajhai kaday na jhooreh moorhay satgur kaa updays sun tooN vikhaa.
Jhajha: You shall never have to regret and repent, you fool, if you listen to the Teachings of the True Guru, for even an instant.
satgur baajhahu gur nahee ko-ee niguray kaa hai naa-o buraa. ||13||
Without the True Guru, there is no Guru at all; one who is without a Guru has a bad reputation. ||13||

In plain words

Even a moment of really listening to true guidance can spare you a lot of later regret.

Good guidance is worth seeking out — it changes the whole direction of your steps.

A single moment of really listening to good guidance can change your whole direction.
The deeper layer

The verse promises relief from regret: ghari ghari... sun satgur... khin — listen to the true teaching even for an instant and you'll have nothing to repent. It's a hopeful counterweight to the earlier 'regret' verses — the medicine that prevents the ache. And it insists on the real thing: bin satgur... gur naahi — without a true guide there's no guide at all. For a child this is simply the value of good, honest guidance: a moment of really listening to someone wise can change your whole direction, and it's worth going out of your way to find it.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone whose guidance is worth really listening to, even for a moment?
