Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 299
Verse 17 of 19

Better to Understand One Thing Than Skim a Hundred

ਹਾਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਬੂਝੁ ਤੂੰ ਮੂੜੇ ਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
haahai har kathaa boojh tooN moorhay taa sadaa sukh ho-ee.
Haha: Understand the Lord's Sermon, you fool; only then shall you attain eternal peace.
manmukh parheh taytaa dukh laagai vin satgur mukat na ho-ee. ||16||
The more the self-willed manmukhs read, the more pain they suffer. Without the True Guru, liberation is not obtained. ||16||

In plain words

Really taking wise teaching to heart is what brings a lasting, settled peace.

Reading more and more without letting it in just tires you out — it's understanding that heals.

It's better to truly understand one good thing than to skim a hundred — only what you take in becomes peace.
The deeper layer

The verse distinguishes understanding from mere reading: grasp the Sermon (khasam kee baat) truly and you attain sadaa sukh, lasting peace — but parhi parhi... dukh paavai, the more you read without understanding, the more you ache. It's not anti-book (again, this is a poem of letters); it's pro-digestion. Facts you swallow without chewing sit heavy; wisdom you actually take in nourishes. For a child: it's better to truly understand one good thing than to skim a hundred, because only what you understand can become peace.

A Question to Sit With

Would you rather memorize many things or deeply understand a few? Why?
