Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 306
Verse 9 of 10

Stay Humble Before What You Can't Fully Understand

ik jant bharam bhulay tin seh aap bhulaa-ay.
Some people wander around, deluded by doubt; their Husband Lord Himself has misled them.
doojai bhaa-ay fireh ha-umai karam kamaa-ay.
They wander around in the love of duality, and they do their deeds in ego.
tin seh aap bhulaa-ay kumaarag paa-ay tin kaa kichh na vasaa-ee.
Their Husband Lord Himself has misled them, and put them on the path of evil. Nothing lies in their power.
tin kee gat avgat tooNhai jaaneh jin ih rachan rachaa-ee.
You alone know their ups and downs, You, who created the creation.
hukam tayraa kharaa bhaaraa gurmukh kisai bujhaa-ay.
The Command of Your Will is very strict; how rare is the Gurmukh who understands.
i-o kahai naanak ki-aa jant vichaaray jaa tuDh bharam bhulaa-ay. ||9||
Thus says Nanak: what can the poor creatures do, when You mislead them into doubt? ||9||

In plain words

Some hearts stay lost in confusion, and it's a mystery we can't fully explain.

Only You truly know each person's ups and downs — You who made us all. We can't always understand it, so we stay humble before it.

Some things we simply can't fully understand — and it's honest to stay humble before the mystery.
The deeper layer

The Chhant's most mysterious verse, and it deserves honesty and a light touch. It admits something the tradition doesn't hide: some wander deluded by doubt, and even that is somehow held within the great mystery — tudh aap khu-aa-i-aa. Rather than explain away why some hearts stay closed, the verse hands the whole puzzle back to the One: You alone know their ups and downs, You who created them. This isn't fatalism; it's the humility of not pretending to understand everything. Why some stay lost and others find their way is not ours to judge — how rare is the one who understands. The honest answer to a hard question is sometimes: this is beyond me, and I trust the One who holds it.

A Question to Sit With

Is it okay to say 'I don't know' about the really big, hard questions?
